What to Buy a Bricklayer? - Gift Ideas

Wondering what to Buy for a Bricklayer?
Don’t worry it’s not hard. Here are some gift ideas to help you choose.
Many lists I’ve seen for Bricklayers or Contractors have some good ideas but also contain junk.
To make it onto this list it needed to meet some high criteria – it’s something I want.
Hey you can’t fail now.

At the end of the article I’ve have some ideas if want to get your bricklayer a thank you gift for completing the job.

Gifts for the Construction Site

These are great practical gifts that are not a necessity for work, but sure make the day easier. It’s amazing how many tradesmen say “I should get one of those, and never do.”

Portable Power Bank

Tradesmen are using their smart phones more and more and very often I find mine flat before the end of the day. Not all work sites have the provision to plug in a charger so the portable power bank becomes so valuable. Especially one that can charge a phone many times without needing to be charged itself. Choose one that's over 30,000mAh.

Contractor's Portfolio

If you are buying for the boss a nice portfolio makes a great gift. It can be used to draft quotes and store business cards. The Dewalt Portfolio can be zipped right up keeping everything dry and tidy. It also has a light attached which is super handy for quoting in the dark, which unfortunately is most of the time.

After Work Gifts

After a hard day at the office, every Bricklayer wants relax and wind down. Some enjoy a drink, a movie, music, or just lying around. Here are some gift suggestions to help.

Beer Glasses

Most brickies enjoy a decent beer. If it is craft beer he's into, more specifically IPA's, then these glasses are a must. Designed by some of the best brewers in the business, these glasses are awesome.

Hammock

What better way is there to chill out than relaxing in a comfortable hammock. Make sure you get one that is strong and large enough to take a big guy. The self standing ones are great because they can be moved around.
Whiskey Set

This is a great gift for a whiskey/ bourbon drinker.  It is all hand made, the wooden base as well as the decanter and glasses. To go along with it, shoot down to the liquor store and pick up a nice spirit.

Coffee Mug

Here is a nice and cheap gift for a Bricklayer. He can take it to work or keep it at home for the morning coffee. Wasp Masonry Apparel make some great products.

Tools

Now this one can be a bit tricky, a brickies tools are personal. To illustrate you would never buy Rodger Federer a tennis racquet, it would just get thrown out. If you do decide to buy a tool as a present, stick close to this guide. Recommended are brands and sizes that most bricklayers use.

Customized Brick Trowel

Getting a Brick Trowel is quite risky, but these are very cool. Quotes, messages even simple pictures can be customized. The trowels used are for professional Bricklayers, I would recommend the 11" Philly Trowel.

Line Pins

Line pins are are good gift because a bricklayer can never have to many. Added bonus they are nice and cheap. Make sure buy the best quality and that is Footprint. The steel will last forever.

Laser Level

This gift is probably the most expensive on the list, but if you are looking for something awesome this is it. This high quality laser level is great for setting out brick and block work as well as checking final levels. It's unlikely that a bricklayer would ever need two, so just check to see if they already have one before buying.

Joint Raker

A Bricklayers first reaction to Ox Tools is normally negative. However their joint raker is awesome - trust me. After a few uses of this raker it's hard to go back to anything else. If you are after an unexpected practical gift this is a great choice.

Gifts to Wear

A bricklayers clothes and accessories get hammered so one can never have enough. It could be tempting to buy one of those tacky T shirts that say “Worlds greatest Bricklayer” but it will just get turned into a rag. Stick to decent gear.

G Shock Watch

A tradesman needs a watch that is tough. G shocks withstand the knocks of a construction site well and easily handle being submerged in water. There are many designs to choose from.

Snapback Cap

A plain cap can be a great gift for a bricky that is always out in the sun. They are not too expensive either. These snapbacks are comfortable and fit well.

Work Hoodie

It's great to have a Hoodie that has been designed for work. Wasp Masonry Apparel is tough and warm hoodie, great for the bricklayers that have to deal with a cold climate. Make sure you don't get one too small, there is nothing more annoying.

Gifts for Hobbies

You’ll need to think about this one, not all Brickies have the same hobbies. Do they like to hit the gym? Get outdoors? Play chess? (yeah right).
Here are some ideas to get you started.

Gym Bag

If you are looking for something cheap but still useful these bags are great. They can be used for gym gear or even just to have spare change of clothes on hand in the work truck.

Survival Knife

For anyone into hunting, hiking or prepping a survival knife is an awesome gift. Ka-Bar knifes have a reputation as being some of the best avaliable. Comes with a hard shell sheath.

SS Brewing Fermenter

This stainless steel fermenter is perfect for the amateur home brewer. With so many awesome beer recipes available now is a great time to upgrade a kit. These fermenters look awesome and make brewing so easy.

Thankyou gift for the completion of a Job

Here is a guide of what to get a tradesman at the end of the job. Don’t forget the job wasn’t done entirely by the main contractor so it’s best to get something that can be shared.
For the right gift ask yourself "how satisfied am I with the finished job?"

Craft Beer

An epic job deserves epic beers. IPA's all round

Lager Beer

There is nothing wrong with the old lager. These go down a treat on a hot day

Almost Beer

Oh dear, Bud light will do
